In 2014 there was big commotion about the growing group of homeless people in Ostend. Public opinion towards them was heavily loaded because of the nuisance. Community arts organisation kleinVerhaal decided to look for a positive answer and founded The Ostend Street Orkestra (TOSO).

In the meantime TOSO grew into a unruly musical orchestra home to up and around 25 musicians that come from all social and musical backgrounds: people born and raised in Ostend and newly arrived people, young and old, people with small scars and people with big scars, musicians with and without scores.

Jazz Musicians Ilse Duyck (Ilse Duyck Group), Giovanni Barcella (BackBack), Bart Maris (Flat Earth Society) en Yamen Martini (Jaune Toujours) are the coaches that tinker together with the group at the organic sound and the constantly shifting repertoire, rooted in improvisation, unlimited by style or genre.

TOSO is a complete experience wherein a constant crossover is made between different musical genres, between the stages and the streets, media and sound, public and musicians. TOSO shows that by coming together resilience and hope are given to a super diverse mix of people. How experiment and improvisation liberate.
